Iron supplements may be the best remedy for women with chronic coughs. After studying otherwise healty nonsmoking women, researchers at Italy's University of Turin found that iron supplements resolved or improved pharyngolaryngitis and coughs in women with iron deficiencies.
"Twenty percent of women in industrialised countries suffer iron
deficiency," says the study leader, Dr. Caterina Bucca. "Iron regulates
the production of inflammatory cytokines (proteins) and its deficiency
might cause upper airway inflammation."
Patients with persistent,
unexplained coughs should also have their vitamin and mineral levels
checked. "We found that other nutritional disorders, such as Vitamin
B12 deficiency, also presented with cough." - RDASIA.COM
